Chalk it up!

Back away from the jogging pants and your mom’s leopard print snuggie. At least for one night. If you’re looking for something to break you out of hibernation mode, look no further than Babylon on February 18th. Chicago alt-hip hoppers Sidewalk Chalk will be rolling into the nation’s capital, bringing more heat than a Hot Pocket that’s been cooking in the microwave for over 4 minutes.
The show is part of Rocksteady Bookings (RSB) monthly Bars & Breakbeats series, which has quickly established itself as a go-to for Ottawa heads. In its latest iteration, RSB once again proves they know how to build a bill that won’t disappoint with Alex Silas & the Subterraneans, CrooKid Bass (rappers KING and Yu$$o), Lost Kids and Spitten Image supporting our out of town visitors.
RSB founder Andrea Desjardins is over the moon having the opportunity to bring Sidewalk Chalk back to the Ottawa. “The last time they came to our city, they gave an engaging and powerful performance, and definitely left a lasting impression on the audience.” For those unfamiliar with band, Sidewalk Chalk is an 8 piece hip-hop, soul & jazz infused band, and they are one of a kind in their sound and presentation. They have a brass section, vocalists, an MC, keyboardist, bass player, drummer, and even have a tap dancer. That’s right, a tap dancer.
But the fun doesn’t stop there; Desjardins is very excited about the local boys that will be opening for the Chi-Town crew “Alex Silas and the Subterraneans were an obvious choice for this bill; they are similar to Sidewalk Chalk in having that unique sound, incorporating live band elements, and both acts bring something different to hip-hop.” While Silas and his crew are a must see, do yourself a favour and check out the other acts on the bill, each of whom are quickly cementing themselves in the city’s hip-hop scene. “CrooKid Bass are a duo I’ve also had the pleasure of working with in the past, both as a group and as their separate solo aliases, KING and Yu$$o. It’s been amazing to watch them grow in the past year, they bring a lot of energy and fun to the stage and really know how to get the crowd engaged and having fun.” Talented duo Lost Kids, who share the same label as local hero Aron the Alien (Macho Man Music) will be laying down their powerful indie rap goodness while MC Spitten Image will be treating the crowd to his honest and real live performance.
Like previous Bars & Breakbeats gigs, spoken word guru Sully will be hosting the show and delivering a side of hip-hop folks may not have sampled. Andrea was introduced to Sully via Alex Silas and she explains why he’s quickly become a mainstay for RSB. “Sully is an incredible Ottawa slam poet. He’s great at loosening everybody up. I think it’s one of our unique twists, to have a hip-hop event start with slam poetry, and that’s what we strive to do: to be unique and different alternative to what’s already out there”.
No matter the rain, sleet or snow happening on February 18th this is a show hip-hop lovers won’t want to miss. Between Sidewalk Chalk, and the multitude of hip-hop styles and slam poetry happening that night, you are sure to warm up—be it emotionally or physically. Still on the fence? Remember this, there will be tap dancing and it will be awesome.
