Showin’ the Love at Hearts ‘n’ Crafts

If you’re looking for a quirky, crafty and all-around fun Friday night, check out the Hearts ‘n’ Crafts Karaoke Craft night. There will be karaoke hosted by Ottawa legend and glamour queen China Doll, a fortune cookie valentine craft workshop (nothing says love like something handmade) and lots of bingo. And this is no run of the mill, cash prize bingo either. Playing here comes with the chance to win all kinds of prizes just right for a very romantic date night. Any of these things on their own is pretty great, so when you put them all together... well, you’ll just have to come and see how good it can get. It might be the only place to celebrate Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, community and D.I.Y. all in one night. The event is a fundraiser for the Ravenswing Arts and Music Fair, an annual showcase of local creativity featuring the work of artisans and writers, live music and DIY workshops open to everyone. I went for the first time last year and found a beautiful celebration of artists living in our community whose work might otherwise fly below the radar, a sunny afternoon with good art, good people, and good vibes.

One of the things that makes Ravenswing special is that it’s DIY and grassroots to the bone: volunteer-run, non-profit and financially self-sufficient, even eschewing government and corporate support. Since the annual fair is free for visitors and table fees are kept low for artists, fundraisers like Hearts ‘n’ Crafts are key in supporting the group’s independence. The Hearts ‘n’ Crafts event Friday is raising money specifically to support the local musicians playing the 2015 Ravenswing Arts and Music Fair. Each year, the fair features a day’s worth of eclectic local music. Last year, for example, the event featured singer-songwriter Her Harbour, spoken word artist Just Jamaal, rock band Fire Antlers, and sets by DJs Gary Franks and Jas-Nasty. Together we can craft and sing and bingo our way to another great day of art and music. Hope you can make it!

P.S. Keep your eyes peeled for Ravenswing 2015 to be held Sunday, May 24 in Minto Park.
